Training doctor's assistant MFA Look after patients

The training to become a medical assistant, formerly a doctor's assistant, lasts 3 years and takes place in a dual system.

What are the tasks?

During the training you attend vocational school and also complete a practical training part in the company.

During the training you learn the following contents:

  • Coordination of patient appointments as well as patient care and counselling before, during and after treatment
  • Patient information about diagnostics, treatment or billing
  • Dealing with patient complaints
  • Assist in medical therapy, for example in the application of wound dressings or support bandages
  • Carrying out hygiene measures, sterilization of instruments and apparatuses
  • Recognition of infectious diseases and implementation of protective measures
  • Drug storage
  • Carrying out laboratory tests and analysing the test results
  • Preparation of surgical treatment measures, care of wounds, removal of suture material
  • Carrying out blood sampling, smears and injections

What are the requirements?

Legally, no school-leaving qualification is required for training as an MFA. However, many companies expect at least a secondary school leaving certificate, or preferably a secondary school leaving certificate. As an applicant, you should have a basic interest in medicine and biology, be stress-resistant and a team player. During the apprenticeship, you will come into direct contact with people who are sometimes ill, so dealing with ailing people should not be a problem. Already in the training you must adhere to the confidentiality and should take this very seriously.
