Operating theatre assistant (OTA) Support doctors during operations

As a surgical technical assistant, formerly also known as an operating room nurse, you work directly with physicians and surgeons and assist them during surgery.

What are the tasks?

As an OTA, you support doctors and surgeons during operations by handing out required instruments and other medical products, receiving examination materials or providing additional equipment. They bear a lot of responsibility and must be able to quickly and safely recall the procedures and handles for different operations. As a reliable team member, OTAs ensure that surgeries run smoothly and quickly.

What are the requirements?

Full-time training as a surgical technical assistant takes 3 years. It is also possible to do a part-time training, which lasts up to 5 years. The school entrance requirement for training as an OTA is an intermediate school leaving certificate. Under certain conditions, a secondary school leaving certificate is also sufficient. Trainees must prove their health suitability (medical certificate). In addition, the vocational schools specify further requirements. Many operations are a matter of life and death. Therefore, the profession can be very stressful. Those who choose this profession should therefore have good empathy, psychological stability and a high sense of duty. A high resistance to stress and general resilience are additionally very advantageous if one wants to pursue this profession.
