Midwife Bringing new life into the world

As a midwife and maternity nurse, you care for women during their pregnancy and during childbirth. They care for mothers and newborns in the postpartum period and accompany them during breastfeeding.

What are the tasks?

The midwives can carry out the birth independently and without a doctor's order. Should complications arise, a midwife is able to recognise this at an early stage and take the necessary steps.

After delivery, midwives care for the newborn and their mothers and document the birth. In addition, they continue to care for the mother in the first days after the birth, take over the aftercare of the newborn and advise on questions of infant care and feeding.

Midwives not only prepare the mother for the birth within the prenatal care, but also support the family with questions about the birth, the postpartum period and parenthood.

What are the requirements?

For the work as a midwife, a 3-year training is a prerequisite. Until 31.12.2022, the training to become a midwife will still take place at school. After that, this form of training will be replaced by a dual course of study leading to a degree in "midwifery". The admission requirement for the dual study programme is either the general university entrance qualification or a completed vocational training in the health and care sector. Midwives need a special empathy and sensitivity. The enjoyment of dealing with people is a prerequisite for this profession.
