Laboratory specialist Under the microscope

Laboratory specialists are more accurately referred to as medical technical laboratory assistants (MTLAs). MTLAs are always in demand when it comes to analyzing and evaluating samples.

What are the tasks?

The medical technical laboratory assistant carries out highly qualified laboratory diagnostic examinations with the aid of various procedures and techniques. Overall, the tasks of MTLAs can be assigned to five areas: Hematology, Histology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology and Molecular Biology. In addition to the chemical composition of body fluids, they also deal with viruses, bacteria, blood cells or tissue samples.

What are the requirements?

For the 3-year training, an intermediate school leaving certificate or A-levels are required. The basics of the profession are taught during the training in subjects such as anatomy, immunology, biology, chemistry or psychology. Much of the training is spent in the school's laboratory, of course, doing practical exercises. One of the most important requirements in this profession is to work absolutely carefully and to handle samples conscientiously. MTLAs often work with colleagues in shifts. A high level of resilience, the ability to work in a team as well as self-organisation and hazard awareness are also part of the job.
