Geriatric nurse Care and nursing of elderly people in need of help

Geriatric nurses (m/f/d) care for, look after and advise elderly people in need of help and support them in coping with everyday life. They motivate and take over nursing- medical as well as planning and administrative tasks.

What are the tasks?

Geriatric nurses work in the care, supply and nursing of older sick or healthy people. They support them in everyday life and help, for example, with personal hygiene, dressing and undressing, preparing food and eating. They administer medication and accompany older people, for example, when they visit the doctor or go to the authorities. They also talk to them about personal matters, motivate them and organise recreational programmes for senior citizens. In addition, they take on organizational and administrative tasks such as determining care needs or planning, coordinating and documenting care measures.

What are the requirements?

As a geriatric nurse, empathy and contact skills are primarily required when dealing with patients and relatives. You should therefore enjoy working with people and have a high level of social competence. In addition, you must be able to deal with psychologically stressful situations, as part of the job is to accompany seriously ill people and the dying. Care and a sense of responsibility when carrying out care measures or when documenting are also of central importance. In addition, you should have a good physical constitution and an interest in medical and nursing tasks.
