Cooks prepare a wide variety of dishes and dress them. They organise the work processes in the kitchen, put together menus, buy ingredients and store them professionally.

What are the tasks?

Cooks provide for the physical well-being of the guests. They carry out all the work involved in the preparation of food. Their tasks include drawing up a menu and purchasing, preparing and, if necessary, storing the necessary food and ingredients. They organise the workflow in the kitchen and ensure that food is finished on time and in the correct order. In smaller kitchens, cooks cook, fry, bake and garnish all dishes themselves. In large kitchens, they usually specialize in preparing specific dishes, such as side dishes, salads, or fish and meat dishes. Their tasks also include calculating prices and advising guests.

What are the requirements?

To be able to work as a cook, you need a three-year training. Legally, there is no specific school education required for training as a cook, but mainly trainees with a secondary school leaving certificate or an intermediate school leaving certificate are hired. As a cook, you should work very carefully and responsibly and adhere to hygiene and food regulations. The profession also requires a certain degree of skill and creativity in handling ingredients and preparing food. In a kitchen, you hardly ever work alone, so the ability to work in a team and a talent for organization are prerequisites.
