The professions of locksmith and blacksmith have been combined to form the profession of metalworker. Metalworkers are experts in metalwork and can work in the three different specialisations of construction technology, metal design or commercial vehicle construction.
What are the tasks?
Metalworkers forge, weld and screw. They bring different materials together and solder, harden, weld, anneal, screw and forge metals for this purpose. Depending on the area of application (construction technology, metal design or commercial vehicle construction), they produce, for example, gates, grilles, railings and stairs or assemble equipment and vehicle parts such as cranes, excavators and tractors. In doing so, they always pay attention to electrical functions. The maintenance and repair of the constructions is also part of their daily routine.
What are the requirements?
The prerequisites for the profession of metal worker include technical understanding and a good knowledge of maths, physics and chemistry. You have to enjoy handling quite heavy materials and need physical fitness as well as manual dexterity for this. Spatial imagination, accuracy and diligence are also important. Since services are part of the job description, you should be sociable and able to work in a team.
